What We Do
What We Believe
At NVRI we believe that American principles of fairness, justice and equality demand a change in the rules governing the American political system.
We believe that:
- the campaign finance system effectively disenfranchises all but the wealthiest and socially best-connected Americans;
- local election practices too often disenfranchise poor and minority voters;
- the time has come to enshrine the right to vote in the U.S. Constitution.
NVRI will challenge laws and practices that lead to disenfranchisement in America.
We also recognize that a true rebirth of American democracy will occur when the unequal circumstances described above are ended, and when there is a corresponding rebirth in traditions of civic engagement in America. Neither alone will make America a shining example of democracy in the world. NVRI focuses its attention on institutional inequalities and unfairness, and endorses, applauds, and works with our partners who are attacking the civic disengagement side of the problem.
Our values:
- A commitment to fundamental American values of fairness, justice and equality;
- A belief that the courts are a powerful instrument for maintaining principles of fairness, justice and equality, but as human institutions, they are influenced by public opinion and changing political forces;
- A commitment to equality of electoral participation by all;
- A commitment to "cutting edge" legal theories and organizing strategies on behalf of the disenfranchised;
- A commitment to collaboration and bridge-building with traditional and non-traditional allies and organizations.
